1965 Mercedes 220Sb (W111) Heckflosse £17995

undergoing preparation – on sale soon

Motodrome offer this original UK RHD 1965 Mercedes 220Sb (W111) , finished in Dark Red  with tan interior

Compared to the horrors that the British motor industry was churning out in the mid 1960’s , these uber-cool ‘Heckflosse’ (Fintail) saloons were light years ahead in terms of engineering quality and dynamic ability, especially when fitted with power steering, as this one is.

Engine and gearbox wise, it runs the correct M127 6-cylinder 2.2 litre twin carburettor motor, coupled to a 4-speed column-change manual gearbox.

Unusually, this is an original UK car first registered January 1965, not an import,

We don’t have a massive amount of history for it, but we do know that it had one owner 1980 to 1993, and another long term owner from then until 2017, who seems to have kept the car stored for most of that time.

The history we do hold starts in 1985, when much seems to have been carried out, including new sills, new front and rear crossmembers, cylinder head overhaul, and reconditioned radiator.

Old paper MOT’s 1987 to 1994 show the mileage between 32031 and 42300 miles, so there’s a possibility that the indicated mileage of 43000 is correct, given it’s spent a long time in storage subsequently.

Notes in the history file would indicate that it was exhumed from storage in 2017, when a long-term rolling restoration began, including extensive work to the bodyshell, a full repaint, all new door and window rubbers, brake rebuild, suspension rebuild, new carburettors, new water pump, fuel lines, hoses, radiator, new chrome bumpers etc etc. These cars are the epitome of cold war West Berlin in the 1960’s, and 60 years later, have wonderful presence.
