Motodrome are pleased to offer this late 1955 Land Rover Series 1 86in 2.0 soft top, known as ‘Ernest’ in his original colour of Bronze Green.

DETAILS
An original UK car, according to the heritage certificate Ernest was built on 18th November 1955 and dispatched on 24th November 1955 to Vincent Greenhous Limited of Shrewsbury
Fitted with a matching set of 5 Deestone 600×16 tyres, wing mirrors, bonnet-mounted spare, 3 seats, Smiths round heater, and aftermarket water temp gauge
Odometer reading 46000 miles, and we have a substantial history file going back to the mid 1990’s. Recent highlights include:
- Rear diff rebuild 2016
- Full electrical overhaul 2017 inc new wiring loom, lights, switches and both wiper motors overhauled
- New tyres all round 2017
- Front axle and swivels rebuild 2019
- Gearbox removal and refurbishment, new clutch and flywheel skimmed 2021
- All new engine electrics Feb 2023
Ernest runs it’s correct type 2.0 petrol engine, albeit there is a plaque on the engine showing it’s a factory-rebuilt unit, and was last serviced July 2022 at 42431m
Whilst Ernest is, of course, RFL, MOT and ULEZ exempt, the previous owner has voluntarily had him tested and hence he has a current MOT until the end of January 2024
Ernest has the patina of a nicely settled-in older restoration (probably done in the early 1990’s) meaning that, if required, he can be used for it’s true purpose rather than a new owner having to treat him with kid gloves.
On a decent test run, I found Ernest to drive absolutely superbly by Series 1 standards. I couldn’t find fault with how he drives and he seems to be in rude health. The last owner used him pretty extensively which always helps.
Scroll to the bottom of the page and you’ll find our usual 2 videos: a walkaround appraisal, and driving impressions, which form part of the description.
